Offline Maps For Andorid At Last!!!!!!
« on: March 09, 2011, 10:09:19 PM »
Well at last I can download open street maps to use offline with my android phone!

There is an app called Locus maps this allows you to view online maps ,and now download them as well.
when downloading I would sugest selecting zoom levels 1 upto 23 as level 24 takes 4 times as much memory and you dont really need it.
You can also put gpx files into the locus directory on your phone and they are displayed on the map.
Locus can display cache details , description and logs without the need for another geocaching app on your phone.

If you use G:geo any list (nearest caches , stored caches etc)  can be displayed on external map ( press menu display on externay map then pick locus)

Once a map is saved on your phone it can be copied off of the sd card onto your pc and shared it takes a while for ech map to be created by your phone so sharing is good.

There is a program to run on a pc for making maps to be displayed on Locus instead of doing it on your phone but I have not tested that yet, it's called
Mobile Atlas Creator :D :D :D

Looks interesting. Currently trying to download 5000 tiles of map data
If at first you do succeed - try not to look too surprised

Help!

I've downloaded the maps, and they show in my 'User Maps' section, but I can't get them to display on the main screen (the tiles show 'Connection Failed' and their is no map shown).

It used to work until I downloaded the maps.

I think I'm missing something simple.

Ok so I have been playing ! If you use Atlas creator only set zoom levels 7 upto 15 inclusive , for some reason they have numbered them differently to the phone!
Enjoy

I've downloaded it but I'm now going to have to have a serious clear-out. My phone's completely chocca and I've still got many updates to squeeze in.

In fact, one of you Androidists might be able to help me with a totally unrelated and therefore completely unforgivable intrusion into what is an otherwise fascinating thread...

I've looked through the files on my 2.1 HTC Hero and there appears to be five copies of Google Maps installed. At around 5.5mb each!

Do I need all these? If I get rid of one, will I lose updates I've done in the past? I know it's a clever app, but surely Google Maps doesn't need 25+mb of data storage?

Any other tips to clear space without having to cull my precious apps?

And as for space Im just about to but a 16Gyb Micro SD card problen solved!

I've got an 8gb memory card, so no problems there, it's phone storage I'm struggling with. I'm fed up of deleting apps to make space for updates.

Is your phone storeing apps in memory?
I thought 2.2 allowed you to store apps and stuff one the sd card and run them from there?

I'm on 2.1 sadly, I don't think hero users will ever see 2.2 unless I root it, which I'm reluctant to do. I'm upgrading in the summer anyway so I'll probably sit tight

I think I might need a help with this yet. I've downloaded four maps successfully of varying sizes, but all say connection failed (or something to that effect) when I try to open them.

Am I doing something wrong?

click on the top right button select user maps then pick the map you want. zoom in until you find the map.
make sure you unclick bottem left button that makes you the center of the map.
when you want to go back to offline maps click ofline maps then select map you want again as it seems to have forgoten which one it was using.
