Definitely a new tab within the same window!  I hate it when I end up with a whole new window!  It's so much easier to navigate between tabs, than between windows AND tabs!  And when I follow a link from the shoutbox, I don't want to be taken away from emCache - hence wanting a new tab, rather than be navigated away from the forum.

Hmmmm...

On emCache (or in this case the Shoutbox) I can control if a link opens in a new window/tab BUT it depends on your preferred browser and / or configuration to dictate if its a new tab or window the link opens in (sorry if that sounds like babble).

To put it another way, older browsers always opened links with certain attributes in new windows - more recent browsers give you the option to change this behaviour so the respective links open in new tabs and more commonly (with Firefox and the newer IE) do it by default.

If you add the "don't care" votes to the prevailing vote (since they don't care, of course), then there is a clear case for the status quo.  So I guess it doesn't really matter too much that you can't control what browser people use.  Your brain must have been on some sort of form, because I understood everything you wrote!
