Are there many caches up there?  I am not disagreeing with the location, we might just need to place some :)

That's a fair point. If anyone has any suggestions of areas which could actually do with some work, please let me know!
Yes - there are a number of caches in the park.

I thought I would just clear up what CITO was in case anybody didn't know...

CITO stands for Cache In Trash Out (a horrible Americanism I know but oh well)

Quote
Cache In Trash Out is an ongoing environmental initiative supported by the worldwide geocaching community. Since 2002, geocachers around the world have been dedicated to improving parks and other cache-friendly places. Through these volunteer efforts, we help preserve the natural beauty of our outdoor resources!

Geocachers around the world celebrate International Cache In Trash Out weekend annually by hosting and participating in Cache In Trash Out Events in their local area. Events might be focused on litter clean-up, removal of invasive species, revegetation efforts or building trails. Together, we make an enormous positive impact. Did we mention that we also have a bit of fun while we're at it?

The 10th Annual Cache In Trash Out Weekend is scheduled for April 21st and 22nd, 2012.

Cache In Trash Out doesn't just happen once a year. It can easily happen on every geocache adventure. Take a bin bag along with you on your walks in the woods and pick up the occasional piece of trash you see on the trail. Even this small act can make a huge difference. BUT you can organize a larger undertaking and accomplish much more with the help of other people. Contact a land manager or local organization and work with them to determine the needs of the community. These can be scheduled any time of the year that works for your location. Always be sure to seek permission before cleaning up any areas that may be on private property etc etc...

That is basically what we are planning to do here :)

Anybody know if they're doing a special Smiley for the CITO events on the 10th anniversary of the first CITO?
If at first you do succeed - try not to look too surprised

Just so you all know - the event is not going to be on the official weekend because I'm on holiday then!
It will be on a weekend (and most likely a Saturday)

Well, I emailed the person who oversees the Colwick Park/Colwick Woods area and he is very keen.
He even said that there may be an opportunity to get involved with things on a more regular basis if we wanted! This may include things like footpath clearance, litter picks etc.
I'll email him back and see if we can get a date arranged.

After some emails going backwards and forwards I can now propose a date!
It will be on 16th June
This would be for a couple of hours in the morning as the park ranger potentially has another event in the afternoon.
Once I've got more details sorted out, I'll set it up as an event.

Do you intend to set up some new caches for the event?  That will help draw more people to attend.

That's a good idea. I'll look at placing a couple of caches over there and will be happy for others to also put some new caches out in the area (ideally not impossible ones Spire! ;))

Don't forget CITO Events, are not locked to just Litter Picking, Ground Clearance (ie removing invasive species) or or other Environmental works,  can be a CITO Event.

CITO Events are about giving back to the environment from which we get our fun, and also a brilliant way of getting Landowners/Managers on side.

Personally at one CITO event I attended, I did Dead Hedging   ;D

Those Stakes had to be sharpened by hand  :o just imagine cachers stood there with lethal weapons in their hands, sharpening the stakes  ;D

Does anyone know of any CITO events on the weekend in April?  Always keen to have another sort of smiley!

I can't help you for the April weekend, Treecrabs, but come to the one I'm sorting on 16th June!
I think the different smiley could be a big attraction.
Once I have some more details, I'll let you all know.
